Accessible and Universal Design need not be boring, ugly or institutional.

Realm Access is passionate about helping our clients improve the accessibility of the public and private realm and create engaging, enabling and inclusive environments for everyone.

We have curated Pinterest boards with the intent of providing a resource for designers and project teams seeking inspiration and character images. The images showcase a collection of the work of designers from Australia and around the world, and includes examples of:

  • Braille and tactile wayfinding maps and interpretive signage

  • Handrails

  • Ramps and walkways

  • Pools and beach access

  • Playgrounds

  • Street and park furniture

  • Therapeutic landscapes and sensory gardens

  • Accessible home interiors

  • Snoezelen and sensory rooms

  • DeafSpace design

You can find our boards here.

Considering many of the projects are international, not all images fully reflect best-practice or have design features that meet the legislative requirements for access under the National Construction Code / Building Code of Australia, the Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards, the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport, and the related Australian Standards for accessibility. Examples have been chosen for their beauty, innovation, and diversity of materials and colour. We believe many examples could be modified to further improve their accessibility and achieve compliance with Australian legislative requirements.

If you would like assistance in navigating and applying the legislative requirements, we welcome the opportunity to discuss your specific project needs. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

We will endeavour to add to the boards as we find further inspiring examples of accessible and Universal Design. We hope you enjoy the collection!
